ACCESS 21st CCLC Students at Stout Middle School Reach for the Stars with NASA STEM Program!

Stout Middle School students are embarking on an extraordinary journey into the world of STEM, thanks to their participation in the prestigious NASA STEM Engagement program, made possible through the ACCESS 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) program. Students will be connecting virtually with NASA experts, participate in professional development workshops, and collaborate to create and submit videos showcasing their innovative solutions.

This extremely rare opportunity provides students with unique hands-on experiences, igniting their passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, preparing them for successful careers in the future. The program will also culminate in a state-based event at the capital that provides students with an inspiring opportunity to showcase their final projects to NASA scientists and engineers in April.

As one of only ten sites in Michigan to participate in this highly competitive national program, Stout Middle School's selection as an ACCESS 21st CCLC site reflects the dedication of our collaborative partnerships and a collective commitment to providing exceptional educational opportunities for the youth in our communities. Focused on real-world problem-solving with guidance from NASA scientists and engineers, this program provides a refreshing change from the traditional classroom experience.

Students are engaging in one of three exciting design challenges:

  • Build, Launch, Recover: Students take on the roles of NASA engineers, designing, building, and testing rockets.
  • Lunar Water Challenge: Students develop innovative filter systems to purify water for future lunar habitats.
  • Astro Socks Challenge: A more advanced project, this challenge involves designing protective footwear for astronauts using Arduino hardware and coding. This unique opportunity requires additional professional development for educators and may involve purchasing specialized hardware.
