The National Arab American Service Day (NAASD), a project of the National Network for Arab American Communities (NNAAC), brings together thousands of volunteers from across the country to give back to their communities through service projects.
Under its motto, “Serving Communities, Connecting People," NAASD draws Arab Americans and non-Arabs in 10 states, including 14 major cities, for a day of volunteerism and community building. For this year’s 10th annual event, we expect more than 1,500 volunteers across the country, including nearly 400 in the Detroit metropolitan area.
This year, for Detroit’s local project, NNAAC is partnering with Healthy Detroit and the AmeriCorps Urban Safety Project at Wayne State University’s Center for Urban Studies to develop the first outdoor health park in the city of Detroit at Clark Park.
Volunteers will join together for the groundbreaking of this innovative new outdoor gym, where in addition to building an outdoor fitness center, activities will include installing two beach volleyball courts, renovating the soccer and baseball fields, inserting new park benches and boarding up abandoned houses neighboring Clark Park.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, with the project at Clark Park running until 4 p.m. If interested in volunteering, or for more information, contact Arwa Algharazi at 313-843-2844, or via email at aalgharazi@accesscommunity.org.
