Children and teens were heating up the kitchen at ACCESS during a summer cooking class titled “Cake Boss,” after the hit TLC television show. A group of 20 students learned different design techniques while creating cakes to take home. They also learned about safety and sanitation, kitchen math and problem solving.
"Learning to cook helps kids develop better nutritional choices, which is so important in helping to combat the widespread childhood obesity problem in our country," said Sarah Shoucair-Chaar, supervisor of academic and development programs at ACCESS.
Cooking is an important skill that the Youth and Education Department incorporates in its education programs offered throughout the year.
“The Cake Boss course has given me a great opportunity to use the skills I have acquired to benefit youth during the summer program offered every year. It has been a pleasure teaching this course for the last three years and I hope programs like this continue to be provided. ACCESS has done a wonderful job putting together activities; my class gets more full each year!” stated instructor Ola Faraj.
The ACCESS Youth and Education Department offers a variety of programs during the summer and through the academic year to enrich, develop and provide students with new opportunities.
